About questions that aren’t in the books, going out without alcohol, and why perfection is overrated

Peek in my week #35

This week started with a new client. He had known my parents. And he brought photos of them I had never seen before. So special! I thought I’d share one. Already drinking back then, but still very happy and adorable together. Beautiful to see.

5 – INTERVIEW WITH BARRY MICHELS

Oh dear reader… this really was a sweet diary moment. I explained it to my son as if he got to talk to his favorite professional football player… because I actually got to:

Interview Barry Michels, from the Tools books and someone I see as a spiritual father, for his Substack!! How freaking cool is that as a start of the week. And of course I asked questions you won’t find online or in the books.

We talked, among other things, about the Laws of The Field: the invisible force that determines whether you get what you want. You can read my article about it here. About commitment, self-restraint, micro-transactions and non-attachment. Letting go of the outcome.

A client of mine called it “a challenging concept for perfectionists.” Because it can feel like you have to do everything perfectly to receive the energy of The Field.

Barry flipped it: you actually need that energy because you are imperfect. If you were perfect, you wouldn’t need it.

His analogy: imagine visiting a wise guru. You don’t want to show up drunk. Not because the guru would reject you, but because you wouldn’t be able to receive.

Most people, he said, show up in the state of “give me answers, help me.” And that is exactly the wrong state.

The full interview will be on my Substack soon. Stay tuned.

4 – ENJOY LIFE: DANCING IN THE CHURCH

Friday morning I saw a message on Instagram:

“Don’t forget to have more joy in life. Do things that are fun. Laugh. Dance.”

Okay… I’m butchering it now reading it back like this 😅 but it was something along those lines.

I took it as a sign and immediately texted Frank van Bergen to ask if he had an extra ticket for Vrienden van Meppel Live in the church, where beautiful events are being hosted nowadays thanks to Annerie Kremer.

Called my bestie. And just like that we were standing at the shawarma place at half past two in the morning, yes new time, which is normally when I’m almost getting up, for a classic pita cheese after a night out. We hadn’t been there in sixteen years and apart from more people behind the counter, nothing had changed.

It was just so much fun. I notice I tend to work a lot, in case you hadn’t picked up on that yet, and I do it with a lot of love, I truly love my work. But every now and then it’s so important to just be off.

3 – BRIGHT LINES UPDATE: ONE AND A HALF MONTHS

Against expectations: not shopping is going well.

For those following along… THE ring. The one I lost last month at Wonders at Work, remember? I got a call a few weeks later. “Found in the nursing room.” So not in the ball pit where I thought it was. Apparently the universe still wanted me to have it. Yes, I can definitely talk something crooked straight when it comes to getting stuff.

So now I wear it with joy, I had already paid for it anyway.

Then the sugar, which I also planned to quit… I did cross the line here and there. But the good news: I’m making very conscious choices. It has to be a 10, thanks Joke van Oort for that inspiration. And I really notice the difference in my body and my confidence.

What a difference. Of course. But hey, even the plumber’s tap leaks…

2 – STATE SHIFT METHOD: FINAL PRINT

It’s really happening. My card deck is going to the final pilot print. You can really keep yourself busy with that. James Clear said it beautifully this week:

“Perfection is expensive. The last 5 percent of quality almost always costs a disproportionate amount of time and money. My favorite type of purchase is where you spend 80 percent of the cost, but get 95 percent of the value.”

I really needed to hear that. It’s not going to be perfect. Although thanks to my partner, who ran everything through his own AI tools, it’s pretty damn close and I’m incredibly grateful for that.

1 – STATE SHIFT STEP: RELEASE & RECEIVE

Do you know that feeling? You really want something, like me wanting to do something perfectly. Or you hold on to how things were. Or how they should be. It takes over your thoughts.

Release & Receive is one of the state shifts in my deck and helps you let go.

Drawing by Natalie Elfers

How it works: imagine putting everything you’re holding onto into a box. The situation. The expectations. A loss. Put it all in there.

Close the box. Lift it up. Hold it for a moment.

Say to yourself: I am willing to let go of everything in this box.

And then you let go.

Feel how much that hurts. Feel how attached you are. Let that pain be there.

The box floats away from you until you can no longer see it. And then you decide: I let go of everything. You let yourself fall back into a soft landing. Away from everything you knew. You slowly fall into a sea of love. You are like a drop in the ocean. One with everything.

From this place you radiate infinite love to everything and everyone. You need nothing back. You hold onto nothing.

Instead of being attached to the outcome, for me: that this training must succeed, that the card deck must sell, I let it go.

If it helps just one person, it’s a success. That has always been my motto. And it already helps me enormously. So that one person can also be me. And it already is.

Do one thing today without expecting a result.

THE RED THREAD

Perfection is not the goal.

You do your best. You follow through on 90 to 95 percent of your commitments. You let go of the last 5 percent. And in between you dance, you laugh, and you eat a pita cheese at half past two in the morning.

Let go. Receive. Live.

That is the shift.

FOR YOU

James Clear asked this week:

“What would it look like if it were easy?”

And: what can you put in a box this week and let go of?

May the life force be with you, thank you for reading.

PKM, FAIL, on the sidelines

Two years of work. And on Tuesday morning I almost couldn’t bring myself to pick up the pilot copy. 😂

The fear is biggest right before the finish line. But (obviously!) I picked it up anyway. And tested it with people.
