52 cards. 7 video lessons. One method that bridges the gap between knowing and being. The Observer exercise is your free starting point.
You know what you should do.
You're just not doing it.
You've read the books. Done the courses. Watched the Stutz documentary on Netflix. Maybe you tried Headspace for three weeks or attended a retreat. You understand the concepts.
And still. You fall back into the same patterns. The same overthinking. The same scrolling. The same staying up too late. The same feeling of "is this it?"
You're not in crisis. From the outside, everything looks fine. Good job. Nice home. People around you.
But inside, there's this quiet undertow. Something is missing. Not dramatic. Not a breakdown. More like... slowly sinking in quicksand while looking perfectly still.
I know who I need to be. I just can't make it stick."
If that hit you somewhere, keep reading.
The problem isn't that you need more knowledge. More books. More podcasts. More insight.
The problem is the gap between knowing and being.
You've read enough.
Nothing changed.
Until now.

"I do the Observer every single morning. Five minutes. It changed how I show up for the rest of the day. Not because I suddenly have all the answers, but because I finally see where I actually am."
Esther van Schaik
You've been here before.
The hero at the beginning.
You know the cycle. You've lived it dozens of times.
- You read something that resonates. A book. A podcast. A post that feels like someone read your diary.
- You feel a surge of motivation. "This time it's different."
- You start. Journaling, meditating, running, eating better. Three days in: "I've got this."
- Week two. Life gets busy. You skip a day. Then two.
- You stop. Quietly. Not dramatically. You just... forget.
- The voice kicks in: "See? You can't stick with anything."
- Shame. "Again. I failed again."
- Wait for the next inspiration spike. Repeat.
This isn't a discipline problem. It's a system problem.
Motivation is an emotion. It comes and goes. You can't build a life on it. You need something smaller. Something you can hold in your hands. Something that meets you where you are, not where you think you should be.
That's what the Observer exercise does.
The gap isn't between knowing and doing.
It's between knowing and being.
Here's what ten years of coaching 600+ people taught me: the problem is never a lack of information. Everyone knows they should meditate. Exercise. Set boundaries. Stop scrolling at midnight.
The problem is that you don't know where you actually are. You're so used to running on autopilot that you've lost track of your own state. You can't shift what you can't see.
The Observer is the most powerful practice in the 52-card deck. Coaches use it more than any other card. It's where everything starts: seeing yourself clearly, without the noise.

Why I made this
I spent years stuck in the same cycle you're in now. I knew all the concepts. I'd read the books. I could coach others through their stuff while ignoring my own.
I was addicted to things nobody calls addictions. Netflix until 2am. Too much wine. Doomscrolling. Staying up late because the quiet felt unbearable. The kind of habits everyone has, the ones nobody talks about, the ones that slowly drain the life out of you.
The shift didn't come from reading one more book. It came from a practice. Something I could do every morning that forced me to look at where I actually was. Not where I wanted to be. Not where I pretended to be. Where I was.
That practice became the Observer. And the Observer became the foundation of the State Shift Method.
These days my morning starts with a card pull, journaling and meditation. CrossFit at 6am. Cold water dipping. I'm not disciplined. I found a system that works when discipline doesn't.
I've coached over 600 people using this method. I'm the only European coach listed on thetoolsbook.com, working with Phil Stutz and Barry Michels' Tools since 2016. I've trained other coaches and therapists to work with this method. And I've sold 10,000+ copies of my books.

What people say
★★★★★
"This is the missing piece between self-help books and actual transformation. Syl made something that works when motivation doesn't."
Che Kelly
★★★★★
"I've done retreats, therapy, coaching. Nothing stuck. The cards stuck. Because they're right there on my desk, every morning, impossible to ignore."

This is not another PDF you'll forget about
You've downloaded freebies before. They sit in a folder on your desktop, unopened, next to the journal you used for three days and the habit tracker you abandoned in February.
This one is different, because it's not asking you to change your life. It's asking you to spend five minutes, once, and notice what happens.
The Observer exercise works because it's small enough to actually do. No 30-day challenge. No morning routine overhaul. No habit stack that falls apart the first busy week.
One exercise. One state check. One small step.
If it resonates, the full State Shift Training is there: 52 cards, 7 video lessons, a booklet, monthly card calls. But that's not what this page is about.
This page is about your first shift. Today. In five minutes.
You don't need to know more. You need to start.
The Observer PDF is free. This is where everything begins.
